You know what they say:  "Cache as cache can."  : )

As mentioned before, it sure would be good if huge on-wafer caches were to
become available and affordable.  Then all the engines and hash tables would
load into the cache.  Maybe the term "latency" would become obsolete.

While on "science fiction," what about three-dimensional wafers?  They would be
really fast, if the heat could get out.  Probably cryogenically cooled, or
cooled using freon.  The "wafer" would be like a sponge, letting the cooling
fluid flow freely through the "wafer." Dimensions could be minimized, with
three-dimensional "wafers," and hence speed maximized.
