Going to have to agree with Dan here -- your friend is wrong to make such a
sweeping generalization. The Athlon and Pentium 4 have different strengths. It
is even debatable that the Athlon outperforms the Pentium 4 in chess.

Most of the benchmarks I see where the Pentium 4 leads Athlon by a wide margin
are also poorly done. I find it hard to believe that an AthlonMP 1600 chip using
Registered/ECC (slower) DDR SDRAM will perform above AthlonXP 2100, 2400, etc.
The tests I refer to are not SMP tests, so my system is disadvantaged in almost
every way.

Truth is that AMD and Intel chips are always neck & neck. The major difference
is that AMD doesn't charge $700 for their latest chip.
