The nontechnical explanation I use for family:

Intel has a higher speed, AMD handles curves better. When a program is basicly a
straight line (fe encoding ) Intel wins big. For a program with extremely much
curves like a chessprogram, AMD is best.

(Add in technical stuff freely, as much as the listener can handle)
