These are rarely publicised, but I have personal knowledge of a couple of events and the fees, in both, turn out to be a sizeable proportion of the first prize ... I agree with you; once you're known to be good the concept of being paid merely for being good, without any further demonstration thereof, is bad! Someone rightly pointed out on r.g.c.m a few days ago that Kasparov appears almost to have given up "proper" play and is taking part in a string of ad hoc matches, simultaneous displays, and other peculiar setups, presumably because the fees from those keep the bank balance nicely topped up.
