This is where go reigns supreme.  The branching factor is 200 to 250, and what
is more insidious is that the position evaluation does not depend upon material
much at all.  Thus, almost all the moves appear 'reasonable' at first glance.
Western Chess at least has the decency to depend heavily upon material; i.e. a
pawn advantage wins most of the time, and a piece advantage wins just about
every time.  There are just enough exceptions to make it interesting from a
competitive and programming perspective.
