Actually, Will, the post is very interesting (although I admit that I had to
read it a few times before I understood it properly). The whole point of this
example is that White's previous move (or a recently preceding move) was e8R.
This means that the rook on e8 has never been moved. If the words "on the same
rank" had been omitted from the FIDE rules it would be a legal castling
manoeuvre. So it is "almost" legal. I don't think the fact that the rook had
been moved in its previous existence as a pawn (see Uri's post in the parallel
thread) is relevant.
