I have the same experiences as Uli. I find it very hard to find out if some
change is an improvement. I try to use statistics, and play a huge number of
blitz games. However the problem with blitzgames is that they are dominated by
cheap tactics. If one dumber version searches 0,2 ply deeper than the smarter
version, it will always win. However that might not be the case at all in longer
games.

But I would say in your case, winning with SUCH significant margins must mean an
improvement.
