I have not really tested the Intel C compilers to see the quality of the
assembly they generate. However, I do know that bitboard manipulations in VC 7
don't work too well. The handling of branches also leaves much to be desired.
The rest of the code is pretty efficient; it took hours of toiling over assembly
code to beat VC 7.
