I liked this post, but I would like to offer my own viewpoint.

This has been my month to be, for lack of a better phrase, moderator-on-call.
It has been my job to make the announcements and warnings and try to handle the
time-critical stuff and the no-brainers.

I know that many of the people who read the group want moderation to be done
quietly, and in fact I think that both of the other moderators want to do
moderation quietly, but since it is my month I decided to be louder.

I have a few reasons for wanting to do this, but mainly I don't feel comfortable
working the other way, which I regard as somewhat Orwellian. It would disturb
me if posts and posters start disappearing without a trace, so I have tried to
make announcements when serious stuff happens.

I very much agree that a deleted post dump would be a good thing.

It has been a rough month. I don't know if my strategy made this worse, but the
point may not be very critical since the month is almost over.

I don't think the group has much interest in getting together, as a group, and
making rules and defining standards. Individuals may yawp loudly about rules
and procedure when something happens that they don't agree with, but as a group
I think people regard every post about rules and procedures as off-topic or at
least uninteresting.

I am willing to continue to try to use my best judgement when moderating, but I
fully expect to see a lot of posts telling me that my judgment is not good
enough.
