I've been reading a book called Blondie24, which documents the creation of a program which 'taught' itself how to play world-class checkers, initially knowing only the rules of the game. The program utilized neural networks and genetic algorithms which simulate Darwinian evolution and natural selection. According to the book, their original idea was to apply these techniques to the game of chess, but "we had time, energy, enthusiasm, one 400 MHz computer, and no money... chess would have to wait for another day... we set our sights a little lower." The book 'Blondie24: Playing at the Edge of AI' can be found at amazon.com. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1558607838/hawaiichesspr-20 You might also want to take a look at another person's effort at writing a chessplaying genetic algorithm in Java. http://www.thycotic.com/computerchess.html
