The universal method is to do use a screen print utility that allows you to edit the image a little. You do the the screen print, then crop the image so that you get just the diagram, then save as GIF or JPG. Next you fire up wordprocessor to insert the image into your document. This will produce a diagram that looks as nice as your favorite board setting in your snazziest chess gui. Even 3D if you want. To get Black on the bottom, just flip the board within the chess gui first. The result will make any other method look 2nd rate in comparison. You must pay 2 prices for this best looking diagram possible: (1) It's is not automatic, so a small amount of labor is involved. (2) The diagram will occupy more space than other methods. It is possible to automate (1) with a macro utility that supports windows e.g. mouse events, etc.
