The new tablebases are easy to recognize by looking at the filename. The old
filenames were "k*k*.nbw.emd" and "k*k*.nbb.emd" (replacing the * with 0 to 4
characters each). (The first dot might be missing, making it "k*k*nbw.emd"). The
new filenames have an extra digit, ie "k*k*.?.nbw.emd", for example
"kqbnkq.0.nbw.emd". This is to prevent files becoming larger than 2 GB, which
would cause problems for 32-bit operating systems, such as MS Windows. I assume
that once 64-bit operating systems become standard we can go back to using only
the old tablebase format for all files.

On a related note... if you're not sure whether your chess program supports
6-piece tablebases in the old format, download a small tablebase pair from Bob's
site to try them out. The smallest 6-piece tablebases that I've seen are KNNN-KR
(only 166 MB).
