Any Chess conspiracy theorist around here? Well if not, i'll play the role :). Kramnik threw that game, so that Ponomariov would have more claim to be the champion, and throw a spanner in the works of replacing Ponomariov with Ivanchuk. The confusion created could postpone everything and let Kramnik hold his title for even a longer time. Kramnik he's a great chessplayer! That match with Fritz, he the greatest drawing player to ever walk the face of the earth needing merely to draw to win a match outright says, and this is a quote " Lets have some fun" and then sacks a piece for no good reason when he had a move that obviously had little risk and would probably have won anyway. Why, to increase the anticipation that a computer might be able to beat him next time, and help to insure that he gets another 3 or 4 day match with a comp where he gets paid a fortune!
