For instance, if you are trying to detect if the king is in check, it might be faster to check from the king's square outward, since the king is usually surrounded by pieces or the edge of the board (unless it's endgame, but you can detect that as you said). If you are trying to detect whether a queen is attacked in a wide open position, probably better to look through the opponent's piece list and see if any pseudo attacks exist, then scan. In the endgame, probably better to look through piece list also, since there will be fewer pieces on the board and less protection for all pieces.
