You might try learning the C programming language, and get the book titled "The C Programming Language." I found it to be a good way to learn C. You could probably find some good stuff online too for free. I'm not sure what a good first language would be. The first language I learned was QBasic. I think you would probably be better off with something interpreted that doesn't get very low-level, so maybe C isn't such a good idea since it deals with pointers a lot. There is probably a good amount of stuff on the net about the BASIC programming language if you want to give that a look. That will let you get the "feel" for programming and modifying programs and becomming familiar with the basic program control flow ideas. You might also consider taking a course at a local community college if you have one nearby. You could certainly find an introductory class to C or C++, and then you would have someone there to help you along when you didn't understand something.
