From the xboard description:

8. Commands from xboard to the engine

xboard
This command will be sent once immediately after your engine process is started.
You can use it to put your engine into "xboard mode" if that is needed. If your
engine prints a prompt to ask for user input, you must turn off the prompt and
output a newline when the "xboard" command comes in.

---END

In other words, xboard tell your engine if got startet through it with the
command xboard.

Just let your engine recognize a new command xboard:

if (strcmp(cmd, "xboard") == 0)
	{
		setbuf(stdout, NULL);
		signal(SIGINT, SIG_IGN);
		printf("xboard mode on\n");
		ppos->engine.xboard = true;
	}
