Harald: IMO this result is a clear sign how strong Fritz 8 is. I think in the moment there are only two programs who are capable of beating Fritz 8, Tiger 15 already has done it in SSDF and maybe Shredder 7 will do the same. All others will end <50%. And Tiger and Shredder will not reach more than 55% against Fritz 8. Stephen: Viele Grusse, Harald. I just reviewed Shredder 7 for Chess Cafe.com (the review will run in about a week or so). I tested Shredder 7 versus Fritz 7.0.0.8 (I don't have Fritz 8). I had them play 30-games against each other at various (primarily longer) time controls. The result was that Shredder 7 finished +2, which I view as statistically insignificant. So I next had them play in a 40-game tournament (included were Ruffian 1.0.0.1, Fritz 6a, Fritz 5.32, and Nimzo 7.32) with a time control of 25' each. The result was that Shredder was the clear winner (although the 4-games Shredder 7 and Fritz 7.0.0.8 played against each other were evenly split) and Fritz finished several games back. Shredder has long had a reputation for a solid style and for excellent defensive chess. But Shredder 7's engine parameter defaults to "Agressive" and indeed it now has a very attractive aggressive style. Nonetheless, it seems to play a lot of closed openings. Conclusion: Shredder 7 and Fritz 7.0.0.8 are of equal strength in "head-to head" competition while Shredder 7 seem stronger in defeating other engines. Since I'm reading that Fritz 8 is clearly stronger than Fritz 7.0.0.8, then I must believe Fritz 8 is stronger than Shredder 7. However, I noticed that Fritz 7.0.0.8 has an evaluaton function that seems very accurate (it agrees with me more than any program I've seen to date), while Shredder 7's evlauation function changes significantly from ply to ply and from move to move. I've tested their evaluations on some of my completed correspondence games. In comparison, Fritz and Shredder both seem to agree regarding who has an advantage, but Shredder seems to magnify the advantage beyond what it really is. In short, I don't trust it's accuracy like I do Fritz 7.0.0.8. All the best, Stephen
