Regarding the question of the required chess strength of the engine programmer: Perhaps the answer is different if you are at the top. Look at "the Fritz people." They are in a terrible situation! There are several mad dogs nipping at their heels and trying to bring Fritz down from the top. In such a situation, everything must count for something. I suspect that "the Fritz people" are strong chess players and they also rely heavily on much stronger players for assistance. That's just a guess, of course. Bob D.
