Maybe he was just exaggerating, but then he has no communication skills. He has
been very precise and technical about the 2000 factor when describing it, so I
thought he was serious. I still do.

Also, even if he was exaggerating, his point is still invalid. Functional
languages are not as slow as he thinks.
