A few years ago, i had to play in a tournament, it was the "Swiss system". The oldest man of our club, is very renown for his advice. I was lucky to get his advice that day, he said: "In Swiss system, lose your first game; then you have an easy tournament, and you can 'easily' win the tournament, by winning all next games" The reasoning behind this, is that you fall in the second half of the table after your first game, and gradually climb the table, facing relatively easy opponents. I went on, played my first game very lazy, and lost it. Then I proceded to win or draw all next games, and finally won the tournament. It was a <1800 tournament, but I still got a nice statue to put in my cabinet :) So people you better learn your engine how to selfmate the first game!!
