Welcome to the CCC family. A lot of helpful people with lots of experience here. I'm almost in the same boat that you are. I'm new to programming and am learning VB.NET on my own, with the goal of eventually writing my own engine. For source code in Basic, you have the following choices: LarsenVB http://digilander.libero.it/larsenvb/ An engine of less-than-average strength. Unfortunately, the source is in Italian, so you might find it hard to decipher. At first glance, it seems to utilize a 10x12 board representation, which I think is non-standard. Migoya Chess http://www.freevbcode.com/ShowCode.Asp?ID=4980 A very weak engine. Unfortunately, the source is in Spanish, but at least you can use an online translator to help decipher the code. At first glance, it seems to utilize a 12x12 board representation. Also, I think it only plays White and isn't Winboard compatible. For my own project, I intend to use a 0x88 board representation, which should be easier to implement than bitboards and more robust than the 8x8 or 12x12 arrays. I'm not very hopeful in finding any VB code that uses 0x88, so I'll be building it from scratch. Also, I'm not fluent in C (yet), though I plan to pick up C# later on. Until then, I'm kinda handicapped because I'm not able to read available C source code. Hope that helps some. Good luck!
