But not so new, there already exist 1-2-3 Java programs, at least applets.

At the moment we just want to develop a working java chess program. With board
presentation and the engine producing legal moves, pgn read/write, setup
position. This is our first goal. And this is indeed from a scratch except the
board layout. Then we look further, there are definitely many ideas lying in
front of us. Comes time comes realization...
At the moment I don't see any reason to create an own engine interface or
protocol. I/we might see one or more when we take a closer look at the existing
protocols and find annoying inconveniencies...
