You should not look at GHz as a performance indicator. There are many things that influence application performace. If you look at www.specbench.org and then to the cpu2000 suite, you'll see that the 2.8 GHz Intel proc runs the crafty benchmark in 94.2 seconds. The AMD XP 2200+ ( 1.8 GHz ) runs the same benchmark in 94.4 seconds. There were 7 prorgrams using AMD 1.8GHz or better and two with single PIV 2.8 GHz. So, there were plenty of hot boxes used.
