Go up one level in this thread
I know that many programs can be dumbed down, but even at their lowest levels they would still be miles away from people just learning to play chess. If an unrated player goes up against a program with a rating of say 1600 it would take quite a few games before you would finally come to a real idea of your strength and at the same time you would have to watch you rating numbers grow smaller and smaller and that can be very discouraging. If however, we start with a program that is rated at the lowest point on the scale, then the player would watch their scores grow larger as they play more games and it would not take as many to get an idea of their relative playing strenth. This in my opinion would increase their interest as positive rewards mean more grativication and create more interest to learn and play more. Both of the replys to my query have been sort of what I expected. I was only hoping for some kind of positive feedback with a good suggestion or two. Thanks Bill
