Like many other spectators I was surprised by Deep Junior's 17th move. [D] r4rk1/pb1n1ppp/2qN4/4p1Pn/2p1P3/2Q1BN2/PP3P1P/2KR3R b - - 0 17 The quality sacrifice seems to achieve nothing. Chessbase's commentary on the move is "Gives a rook for a knight in order to save the pawn on e5" and gives a brief alternative line. I'm sure there is more to it than this. Could someone please post an analysis of what would have happened if DJ had played other moves, in particular Rab8? I don't see how Rab8 could have lead to anything worse than what actually happened.
