Here is my guess about it.

Junior is simply designed to be less materialistic and sacrifice material for
***.

In most cases *** is positional compensation but there are cases when *** is
another thing and kasparov probably discovered it in his preperation and go for
positions when *** is another thing.

I have no idea at this moment what is *** and maybe other people can give ideas.
