17.....rae8 is not bad move. Here is Kasparov's commentary: From the human�s standpoint this move looks paradoxical. On the other hand, from the machine�s angle it is quite logical. Since the e5-pawn was under attack, the computer chose the lesser of two evils. After 17...Rad8 18.Nxe5 Nxe5 19.Qxe5 Ba8 20.f3 Black is helpless. Its pieces are poorly placed; there is no compensation for the pawn. By the way, I would not say that this exchange sacrifice is absolutely innocuous. A human might get confused in such a situation.
