I thought this was what they did normaly, eg. calculate an offer until they see
a position with at least a draw but probably more (Tisdall's thinking
technique?).

Why he didn't stop before Qa1 looks a bit 'patzer' but he probably didn't think
the moveorders did matters at the moment.
