Subject: GK v DJ Game 1, what if 13...Bb7? F8 - S7 engine match

GK v DJ Game 1, what if 13...Bb7?

There has been a lot of comment about black’s (DJ’s) move 13...b5 as being a bad
move by Junior, and perhaps decisive in its loss to Kasparov. Amir, one of
Junior’s programmers in commenting on the game, in a post below, stated:

13... b5 {Very much a Junior move. Of the alternative suggested: c5 is detested
by Junior, and seems to lose quickly. 13... Bb7 14. dxc6 Bxc6 15. Nb5 Bxb5 16.
Bxb5 Nc5 17. b4 Ne6 18. Qxc7 Bxc7 (or Nxc7) may be better for black, but not by
much, and with the queens off not really a practical chance}

Uri Blass suggested that an engine-engine match from the position after 13...Bb7
could be illustrative of how the game could have continued from that point,
rather than the actual move 13...b5.

I set up a Fritz 8 v Shredder 7 two game match from that position after
13...Bb7, giving each side six hours plus ten seconds a move to complete the
game. Each engine played white once and black once. In both cases white won,
giving an indication that by black’s move 13 his position had deteriorated so
much that even 13...Bb7 would not have saved Junior. Athlon 750, 96MB hash for
both. Games follow. Interesting to note that it took Shredder 7 only a total
of 51 moves (including the first 13 moves) as white to checkmate black, while
Fritz 8 took a total of 112 moves to do the same (no tablebases used).
