Since I'm not a very experienced programmer I won't argue wether or not this project has any potential. But... I would like you here to recognice two things: Not doing very much examining work is not all a bad thing, it might get you some very fresh idéas on how to do things. If they are lucky they might something that can be used in other engines to improve the performance. And even if they don't they may end up with an engine that at least play some poor chess, and they might learn something. #Chess is not a strong engine, but it's only my first attempt, if I enjoy it I'll start a new project that will hopefully be better. Regarding the naming issue, it's a blunder but is you attempt to write a chess engine I really think they can find out how to rename some files too (and create a new project at sourceforge). I really think that some comments on this forum (the small minority but still some) express an elitistic or competetive opinion, that might discourage people from giving it a try them selves. I really think that for computer chess to evolve and exist for many years on, we all must contribute to leading more programmers to the field, otherwise in 20 years all that's left might be a couple of diehards that's considered mad by everybody else. So wish him good luck instead, and hope that the "other yace" really becomes the first of the next generation of chess engines. Regards Albert Bertilsson
