Almost all? I just checked the 22 unique Chessbase engines in my collection (ie
not different versions of the same engine) and there were 17 with DLLs and 5
without.

You're best addressing the question directly to people in this forum who have
written Chessbase engines that have the ENG/DLL tandem. They might give you
different answers, based on the design of their respective engines. Try Ulrich
Tuerke (Comet) and Christoph Theron (Chess Tiger). There must be others, but
they're the only ones I can think of at the moment.
