My computer locks up as well under similar conditions. I'm running Windows 98,
and I know that I have more than enough memory available. A diagnosis program
that I sometimes run tells me that it is because all the available GDI
ressources have been used up (whatever they are) and advises me to upgrade to
Windows XP to solve the problem.
