The Fide rules of 1997 state that the player having the move can claim a draw if "the last 50 consecutive moves have been made by each player without the movement of any pawn and without the capture of any piece". Till now I have always assumed that there is one exception: the player having the move cannot claim a draw if his/her/its king is checkmated. But the Fide rules don't say anything about checkmate. So it's always draw, checkmate or not? Martin
