Recently I was using Deep Fritz 7 to beat up Chess Genius 3 during an informal match. I initially used a time control of "all moves in 1 hour". DF7 won, no big deal or surprise, but I wasn't overly impressed with it's play. Maybe it needed more time to show it's full potential?! Rather than increase the time control, I changed it to be "40 in 50 min, followed by 10 min sudden death", for DF7 only (CG3 still all in 1 hr). This causes DF to use more time upfront. I've only played a small number of games, but I'm more impressed with DF's play with this time usage - the games get more frequently won before move 40 and in nice style. Does this mean that DF's time usage for "all in 1 hour" isn't optimal?! I'm not saying this is case. For example, maybe if I used a better opponent than CG3, then the games would more often go beyond 40 moves and DF would then pay the penality for what could then appear to be poor time usage?! Ideally, if I had the time, I'd test my thoughts in practice (various opponents, larger sample of games, etc.). In the meantime, any comments/guesses? Is the more impressive play just due a relatively weak opponent and/or an inadequate number of games? Or is this better time usage for DF? Gordon
