Thank you! You are a genius. The Fritz6 GUI works as you have described.

Actually I have used winboard232d from your website, and successfully connected
using the Hiarcs8 (Fritz 7) GUI as follows:

1. Start winboard / winboard232d first using the -network option (instead of
-pipe)
2. Then start two engine match in Hiarcs8 GUI, server name 127.0.0.1 (instead of
.)
3. Important: UNCHECK the "Master" tickbox in the next dialogue that comes up.

and success.
