In 1992, at the ACM computer chess tournament in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Lachex (a program by Burton Wendroff who works at Los Alamos National Lab) was playing and Mike Valvo was discussing this point about another program. Burt spoke up "I don't do underpromotions either although my move input code will accepth them with no problems." Mike asked "what if?" and Burt responded "It's *never* come up." Burt left for home (a 70 mile drive) and while he was on the way, Lachex entered into a combination that it thought led to mating the opponent. Unfortunately, at the right moment the opponent underpromoted to a knight with check, and mated Lachex instead. Tony Warnock called Burt from the playing hall and said only "it came up." Lachex did underpromotions the next round. :) I have seen (in 100,000 games with crafty) *many* underpromotions that were necessary... Maybe not one in 100 games, or even in 200, but they do come up...
