I do not think that black could get the advantage by d5.
After 16...d5 17.f4 I do not see that black has the advantage.

It is not clear if 17...b5 or 18...b5 leads to an advantage for black.

Kasparov also commented about 18...b5 and he did not play it not because of the
piece sacrifice but because of other reasons.
