A reason could consist in the fact that the index corresponding to a given
position is the same in both the files, and therefore the result is different if
white or black has the move.
In other words the index is computed assuming a fixed order for the men,  for
example kings before, than white men and finally black men, obviously with an
exact rule for the sequence.

This IMHO is only the simplest hypothesis.

A question: also for instance kqkq.nbw and kqkq.nbb are different? Or this
happens only with pawns?
