In the course of my work on the ChessBrain project I often compile code for various operating systems. Currently, MSWindows, GNU/Linux and MacOSX (using GNU tools for Darwin). Many of our members have encountered differences in the performance of the PeerNode client for Windows versus the one for Linux. The Windows version is compiled using the new Visual .Net Studio (C++, native) and the Linux version is compiled using G++. Currently the Windows version is considerably faster (almost twice as fast!) as the Linux version. I’m sure there are optimizations to be had with more advance use of the available compiler switches for GCC. My question is whether others have encountered that their programs run faster when compiled under Windows. Finally, does anyone have direct experience with Intel’s compiler for Linux? - Carlos Justiniano cjus@chessbrain.net http://www.chessbrain.net
