Look at any event where strong programs play each other. Ruffian and Crafty, both capable of beating one another (as happened in CCT5). Fritz, Tiger, Shredder, Junior, Chessmaster, Rebel, Hiarcs (and on, and on, and on...) are all capable of beating one another on any given day. I'm sure that a match between Deep Blue and <insert top chess program here> would end close to even, with wins for both sides.
