I have been tampering with parameter settings, but primarily for analysis.
If you're interested I can send you a simple example. I also think that the
primary reason for ChessBase to add engine parameters is for analysis or solving
specific (say tactical) situations.

As a rule of thumb you shouldn't change parameters if you want to play the
strongest game possible with normal time controls  ("general play").
Maybe at extreme fast time controls (bullet, lightning)you could change engine
parameters to make Fritz 8 tactically stronger. In that case you could alter
"scale evaluations", or let Fritz forget about "King safety" to get va banque
play, or change "futility pruning" to make it count faster, etc.

Because *ChessMaster* gives much exposure marketingwise to the personalities,
tweaking is an integral part of the "base" program, thus you'll see more
discussions about CM personalities.
