BlitzIn = ICC

another popular chess server: FICS www.freechess.org

I have some (not very much) experience on ICC, and some more on Chess.Net and
Playchess.com. Playchess is the natural choice if you have a Fritz 7 (etc.) GUI
with the free access, but you could still (alternatively or in addition to it)
try ICC's BlitzIn, where even the free guest access is attractive IMO. I liked
also Chess.Net, which even provided ratings with a free account; I don't know if
this is still possible (haven't been there for a while). Chess.Net offers (or
offerd) also a quite good free server GUI.

If you are not the "nerd" type of user, the Playchess account's features will be
easier to handle in the Fritz GUI, while some advanced options at ICC and
Chess.Net (and probably on FICS too) have to be set by so called formulas. These
are similar to programming language commands, where you have to care for the
exact syntax (but the basic options in BlitzIn are mouse controlled, so to
speak).

I don't know much about FICS, except that it is similar to ICC, but doesn't have
such a nice free GUI like BlitzIn. But there are some free server GUIs
available which have their fans, each.

Baseline: First, try everything which is free. :o)
