The more you enjoy any activity the more you will do it. Improvement comes with practice. (2) There are many forms of chess. Play around with some of them and find out which you like best. Here are a few: casual games with close friends playing with a chess clock. [Five minute speed chess is popular.] playing on the internet watching GM analysis, on the internet, of an ongoing game [my favorite] looking over a recent GM game with friends, trying to understand "what happened" looking over your games and games of friends with your friends maybe enter a tournament. [Avoid tournaments at high levels. Start small.] create a chess engine [No, that was a joke.] etc.
