if you just wanna have fun, join the server that's topologically closest to you. the lowest lag delay that you have, the more you will enjoy rapid play, which sems to be what internet chess is about in most parts of the world outside of usa, when telephone connections are timed. If you need to feel sure of a game with a peer, day or night, then you need to join the biggest most reliable server which supports the most players.... i wont plug them but you might know who I mean. if you just want to play slow chess for free, then there's fics, yahoo games, microsoft.net's msn games, etc.
