To me the a4 idea was pretty simple.  a4.  Ka4 is a lost KNN vs KP ending.  a4
Kxc4 loses
to the white knight getting to c3 just in time to hold the a pawn and the king
can't take or the
pawn runs, and the resulting ending is easier to win as the pawn promotes.  So
a4 Kxa4 is the
only hope and that is lost in a ridiculous number of moves.  But to the
computer, a mate is
a mate.  :)
