I wonder if your ftp server is configured to do a reverse lookup on the connecting client IP address for logging purposes or something, and if unable it doesn't work. That might explain why some people see the problem and not others? Some people originate behind NAT from private subnets (like me). I tried using ssh, for example, and get far enough that it would seem like I am reaching the machine? telnet connections are refused immediately, which seems like a good sign. ftp still hangs until it times out. Maybe it's a problem with the ftp server configuration and reverse lookups?
