For example, fritz 5 definitely plays better chess than fritz 4, even though version 4 may do just as well on tactical problem suites. But chess isn't only tactics, it is positional play when the search can't find any tactics, and there fritz 5 is clearly superior. Crafty of today is not any faster than crafty from 2 years ago, yet crafty of today will smash crafty of two years ago pretty handily... although it might do worse at some tactical tests because today's version is slower with more evaluation code.
