But I have to be very careful with what I do with other "friendly >tools". I have the option to use 3 or 4 simple editing tools (like notepad or >worpad) and none of them satisfied me 100%. The one that is closer to what I >expect is Kwrite but still not perfect. Either printing is not correct or >something silly is not there, or the font I see in the screen is not the one I >see in the printer etc. As you can see, I am not that greedy. I thought that >these things would work very well. I will be patient and alert. >As a hobby, at home, it is ok. At work, I cannot waste a lot of time. For text editing, forget this Kwrite/Kate stuff. 2 best editors in world are vim and emacs. Im gvim (vim with GUI) user. Im using gvim.exe even under Windows, i find it is better than UltraEdit. Even some Microsoft workers are using it, look at http://www.vim.org/news/news.php "Microsoft helps Vim charity". Vim is really super good editor, the more i use it the more i like it. I have in home Linux only machine, in work i use 2 machines - 1 Linux and 1 Windows. We are using Exchange and other MS stuff, thats why i need also Win in work. But i do all my chess in Linux. Crafty + XBoard + Scid is really solid and well working trio, provides everything i need. And new software like Knights and Eboard is coming. Yace is another strong engine works in Linux. There are also rumors that Ruffian and Chess Tiger are coming to Linux. I think Linux is already very good Desktop OS. Mozilla, OpenOffice, Evolution, GIMP, Nautilus - these are all mature, functional, well working apps. For multimedia MPlayer and XMMS are apps i very very like. Everything just works and desktop looks beatiful. Sure its absolutely ready for work, not only for home hobby. Kunnar
