Bochs has been mentioned here several times before. It emulates x86 + mmx + x86-64 instructions running on a standard PC. The OS is not 'emulated'. It just runs in the 'box'. Other emulators exist albeit they tend to be more immature, like DosBox. Virtualizing x86 software also exist. VMWare and Virtual PC are commercial. Free ones are a386 and Plex86 for example. Recent postings on the Plex86 sourceforge site states the possible merging of the Plex86 code into Bochs. That would mean that Bochs would run close to full clockspeed if that happened.
