There was a proposed vector component to the now-defunct Alpha EV8 (21464) processor. Here is a link to the paper about it: http://www.cs.wisc.edu/~mulvihil/EspasaR_Tarantula_final.pdf You can see that the power of a true vector architecture is quite amazing when used properly. It's too bad this processor will never be manufactured. I can imagine that a properly optimized chess program would be somewhat more than merely 'fast' on it.
